SAUK CITY - An early morning fire destroyed two historic buildings on Water Street and damaged threatening two others as fire departments from four communities battled the blaze. Sauk City Police Chief Jerry Strunz said the fire broke out around 2 a.m. in the basement of Ganser Variety Limited, a historic five-and-dime built in the 1800s and located at 812 Water St.
He said the fire spread to the building next door, Tri-County Footwear, 814 Water St., and both buildings were destroyed. No one was injured.Strunz said, "Obviously, whenever you have a fire started in the middle of the night, there has to be a reason for it." But, he added, there were no witnesses and the businesses were closed.
The city's main street, which backs up on the Wisconsin River, was barricaded as early as 3:30 a.m. and traffic on the bridge on U.S. 12 was diverted as firefighters from Sauk City, Prairie du Sac, Baraboo and Lodi directed 2,000 gallons of water a minute from each of three tower trucks onto the caved-in buildings. The village pooled resources with Prairie du Sac to ensure an adequate supply of water throughout the night.
